A loaded question, yes, but one which answer is going to vary depending on who is asking and what exactly they are looking for.
Asking a web designer, ‘how much will it cost for you to design and build my website’ is a little like asking an architect how much it would cost to design your dream home and have it built.
No house build is the same as any other and the same is true of web design – at least, bespoke web design.
If your business is centred around your website, and these days that is invariably true, then you should be prepared to put in the same kind of investment for your online presence as your bricks and mortar business.
You would not say to your shop fitters, ‘here’s £500, make me the best store on the high street’. Or at least, you would not expect it to actually happen! We all know what would happen – you would get exactly the kind of work your team would be prepared to do for that amount of money – not a lot.

You should be looking to invest something in the region of £3-£4k.
If you need an online shop then you should be planning for a budget of around £7-8k.
This will give you a good E-commerce website, enabling your customers to purchase your goods or services online with merchant services such as sagepay or paypal.
If you are looking toward the future, and wanting to give your business the best possible advantage with an all singing, all dancing website then a full feature package is what you are looking at. And all this extra functionality will need to be factored in as additional work to the above costs.
When you look at the above figures, keep in mind that most successful businesses would be looking to easily recoup that kind of investment within the first few months. With a professionally designed and developed website, you should be too.
Going back to the bricks & mortar example, you wouldn’t expect the build team to just take your money and walk away once the job was done. Would you? You shouldn’t expect your web designers to do that either.
