Sustainability

Responsible Forestry

Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified papers are used as an alternative to recycled paper and encourage responsible forestry. Managed forests foster a healthier environment, protecting biodiversity and providing raw materials to produce paper in the long term. No matter how much we recycle, we will always require some non-recycled fibres. With responsible forestry both trees and non-wood fibres can be cultivated as sources of virgin fibres reducing the need to destroy old growth forests for paper.

Help Recycling Programmes Stay Viable and Effective

Recycled Paper contains recycled content which is measured as a percentage of post and pre-consumer content. Post-consumer content is paper that has been used and returned through a recycling program. Pre-consumer materials are those that have not met their intended end-use including waste left over from printing processes. By purchasing recycled paper you will be diverting waste from landfills, incinerators or other waste disposal options. By using post-consumer content papers you will be helping to ensure that recycling programmes stay viable and effective.

Chlorine Free Paper

What is Chlorine Free Paper?

As an alternative to the traditional bleaching process we source totally chlorine free paper (TCF). TCF paper is manufactured without the use of chlorine or chlorine compounds. Instead, methods including oxygen and hydrogen peroxide are used to bleach the pulp eliminating the health risks associated with chlorine and reducing water consumption in the bleaching process. Chlorine free paper refers to recycled paper in which the recycled content is unbleached or bleached without chlorine or chlorine derivatives. In the last decade research has linked dioxins and pollutants created by chlorine and its industrial effluents with adverse affects on the environment and to humans.

What are Eco Friendly Inks?

Flipflop Design agency source vegetable based inks with minimal oil or solvent content as an alternative to traditional, hazardous oil-based printing inks. These vegetable based inks reduce the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants emitted in the printing process and are equivalent in performance and printed results to mineral oil based inks. There are two areas of concern related to the composition and environmental impact of printing inks. VOCs are carbon containing compounds that can contribute to air and water pollution. These are mostly derived from petroleum products and are used as solvents. The amount of VOCs emitted will depend on the type of printing. Renewable inks are vegetable based inks that contain vegetable oil rather than petroleum. These inks are better for the environment because they are partially made with renewable resources such as soy, linseed and corn.

Laminating Plastic on a Roll

Eco Friendly Finishing

Biodegradable Lamination

Novel laminate structures can be sourced where the exterior gloss is made from degradable resin materials. These materials accelerate the paperboard's degradable properties. In addition, the raw material for the board comes predominantly from wood pulp from sustainable forests and some cotton linters. The laminate can be easily separated from board. This leaves a much cleaner pulp when recycled and can be more readily dealt with during incineration. Lastly, if put to landfill the laminate does not produce any toxic chemicals which might leak out.
